Abstract

This thesis discusses the use of computers in teaching programming languages. A system to teach FORTRAN to students who have no previous programming experience is proposed. The main functions of the system (instruction, simulation, and testing) are examined. The modules of the program designed to implement the system are analyzed. The data structures for this program are described. Some of the possible extensions to the system are recommended for the future consideration. The system is written in Pascal and implemented on the DEC VAX 11/780, using the special graphics mode of the VT100 terminal.
