Abstract

In dealing with Emily Dickinson's confusion of lover and God in certain poems, this thesis necessarily investigates several biographers' claims that they have identified the lover. Of the candidates proposed, only two are seriously considered, Charles Wadsworth and Kate Scott Anthon. Also considered is the possibility that Emily Dickinson had no flesh-and-blood lover. The first chapter of the thesis discusses these several possibilities, as well as relevant critical material, and states the reasons for confining the investigation to Bolts of Melody, the only unquestioned edition of Emily Dickinson's poetry.
