dc.description.abstractThe purpose of the study was to review the development and growth of the Organization of American Kodaly Educators (OAKE) . Further, it was to provide OAKE with a record of its history from its inception in 1974 through 1982. OAKE consists of music educators dedicated to raising the caliber of teacher training and upgrading the quality of music education in the United States. The group was established through the assiduous efforts of a few music educators who sought to open lines of communication and to perpetuate a spirit of cooperation among other music educators. Initial plans for OAKE's formation were begun in August, 1973, when the first International Kodaly Symposium was held in Oakland, California. At that time, delegates from the United States and other countries expressed the need for communication between educators interested in the teaching philosophy of Zoltan Kodaly. During a subsequent meeting at the 1974 Music Educators National Conference, Anaheim, California, a genesis of policies and guidelines led to the development of OAKE. OAKE members now represent a variety of teaching levels, ranging from pre-school to college and university. An historical method was basic to this study. It focused upon OAKE's philosophy, events responsible for its development, and the meaningful contributions made by OAKE members. Further, it examined the general principles of OAKE and progress toward the attainment of its founding goals. The writer secured the OAKE archives, records, documents, and letters from former OAKE Board Members. Also consulted were articles from other music journals, programs, and publications, such as Music Educators Journal and Journal of Research in Music Education. Additional data were collected through personal interviews with past and present OAKE Board Members. A synthesis of data was arranged chronologically and Annual Conferences were reviewed. Also chronicled were accomplishments following the establishment of the position of Executive Secretary, events leading to the development of affiliate groups, long-term planning for future conferences, and the expansion and revision of responsibilities for Board Members. Another source of information pertinent to this study was OAKE's professional journal, the Kodaly Envoy. A content analysis of Volumes I-VIII was included. Based upon evidence of the data gathered, it was concluded that OAKE members have supported the founding goals of communication and cooperation. The formation of regional groups further enhanced the effectiveness of communication. OAKE members have influenced public school music programs and have written supplements to music textbook series. Cooperation between OAKE and other music organizations resulted in its affiliation with Music Educators National Conference (MENC), and a reciprocity of an Institutional Membership with the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA). Through these means, OAKE has significantly influenced American music education from its formation in 1974 throughout its modest growth to over 800 members in 1982.
