Abstract

A significant disparity exists between the overall dropout rate and the dropout rate for African American males. Research is limited in the area of incorporating programs and initiatives that inspire the aforementioned group to achieve high school completion. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences that exist in the dropout rates for African American males enrolled in career academies and African American males not enrolled in career academies. A sample size of 641 participants with data available for the 2011-2012 school year and the 2014-2015 school year was randomly selected consisting of African American male students enrolled in career academies and African American male students not enrolled in career academies. The data sources used to collect the quantitative data for this study were archival in nature and retrieved from an available sample. A two-tailed t-test was then used to compare the two groups’ graduation rates, attendance rates, and grade point averages. With respect to the central research question of this investigation, the graduation rates of African American males who were enrolled in a career academy were statistically significantly higher than were the graduation rates of African American males who were not enrolled in a career academy.
