Abstract

Physarum rigidum was cultured in a semi-defined medium developed by Henney and Penney and was observed to elaborate an extracellular slime into the medium. The chemical nature of this extracellular slime has been investigated. It has been determined that it is glycoprotein in nature, consisting of the commonly occuring protein amino acids and the neutral sugar, galactose. The carbohydrate/protein percentage ratio is an average of 34.7%/65.3%.
