Abstract
An experimental investigation of film and transitional boiling from a 3/4 inch diameter silver-plated copper sphere traveling in distilled water was conducted. A transient quenching technique was used to obtain the experimental data. The mechanisms of transition from film boiling to nucleate boiling were recorded and studied in high-speed motion pictures. A time sequence of the events that accompany transition is included. The effects of velocity, subcooling, and superheating on the transitional boiling process were investigated. An analysis of the effect of changes in each of the parameters on transition is presented.
