Abstract

The performance of a digital communication system is commonly specified in terms of its bit-error probability. A series expansion method for the time-invariant channel subject to intersymbol interference and additive Gaussian noise is demonstrated in the literature. This technique is extended herein to the case of a parallel channel with a primary and a secondary transmission path. Theory is developed herein to deal with cases of randomly varying as well as time-invariant secondary paths. Such a model is representative of a number of cases encountered in practice, particularly in underwater acoustic communication. Several examples are considered. Results are discussed and compared with previously published data.
