Abstract

Beneekea (Lucibacterium) harveyi, a marine, bioluminescent enteric bacterium, was the first marine bacterium shown to produce a bacteriocin-like substance mediated by a plasmid. Characterization of this bacteriocin-like substance, and determination of its activity under in vitro and simulated in situ conditions, were the objectives of this study. This harveyicin was shown to be proteinaceous by its sensitivity to certain proteolytic enzymes. The non-dialyzable nature of this bacteriocin allowed for its concentration under negative pressure. Fractional precipitation by ammonium sulfate also produced high recovery of bacteriocin. [...]
