Abstract

The flow characteristics of a fluid passing through the annulus formed between concentric spheres was investigated. The fluid was considered to be viscous, incompressible, and isothermal. Both analytical and experimental studies were performed. An analytical solution does not appear feasible. Experimental measurements of pressures indicated the presence of a highly irregular flow pattern and were not adequate to describe the flow. This necessitated the development of flow-visualization and photographic techniques capable of describing the flow characteristics. Photographic results are presented for various flow rates. The results indicate a highly irregular flow which is characterized by the shedding of vortices and is strongly dependent upon the symmetry of the entrance conditions.
