Abstract

The purpose of this study was threefold: (1) To assess early childhood programs and determine the extent of multiculturalism according to identified multicultural concepts; (2) To develop an instrument to assess the extent of multiculturalism in selected early childhood programs; and (3) To make recommendations for further research and study in an urban central city. This study was pursued because of its perceived significance and potential contributions to the field of early childhood education. In an effort to test the major hypotheses, this study constituted developing, validating, and establishing the reliability of an instrument. After the instrument was developed, the study tested the following hypotheses: (1) There is a positive relationship between the administrative entity and the extent of multiculturalism in early childhood programs; (2) There is a positive relationship between early childhood programs which meet minimum licence requirements and the extent of multiculturalism; and (3) There is a positive relationship between the staffing characteristics of early childhood programs and the extent of multiculturalism.
