Abstract

The purpose of these experiments was to compare the effects of isoionic media containing different concentrations of sodium and potassium ions on the formation of morphine glucoronide in vitro. The metabolism of liver slices in media containing mainly sodium ions results in a net hexose formation from glycogen and trioses, whereas media containing mainly potatssium ions have the reverse effect on the equilibria of the reactions catalyzed by the enzymes involved. The greatest rate of conjugation was expected to occur in the environment which favored the production of the largest concentration of the more immediate precursor of glucoronic acid.
