dc.description.abstractMany severe constraints are placed upon a satellite; therefore, each time a new scientific mission is conceived a new system must be designed in order to optimize the mission. Because of advances in the state-of-the-art and the characteristics of the data to be gathered, a completely digital system was designed to support this mission. The communication portion of this system is discussed in detail in this thesis. A description of the satellite mission and constraints placed upon this system are discussed. A study of the techniques that might be used to solve the problems associated with the mission this communication system is to support is discussed. A design employing state-of-the-art techniques that can be implemented in the time period of this mission within the ground rules stated is performed.
