Abstract
The work of Witkin and his associates is discussed as it pertains to normal individuals and to the mentally retarded. Some related literature is considered. A study is presented using Witkin and associates' methods on a small sample of mentally retarded subjects. In exploring Witkin and associates' approach with institutional subjects, it appears that their hypothesis is borne out in the cultural-familial cases but not necessarily in other etiological classifications. Implications for future research are discussed.
