dc.description.abstractA unique method for determining parameters for adsorption processes is established. Theory is developed which correlates various rate and equilibrium parameters to the time-temperature response of a pulsed packed bed. Several models are developed and guidelines are established to indicate when each can be used. For the model which assumes local equilibrium to heat and mass transfer, the first three moments can be used to determine the heat of adsorption. Shock layer theory for a packed adsorber subjected to a step in feed adsorbent concentration is reviewed. A comparison of the results of shock layer and moment theories is given and the fact that the shock layer resulting from a step change travels at velocity of the center of gravity of a pulse is established. It is proposed that application of shock layer theory will allow direct determination of the adsorption isotherm from the results of a single experiment.
