dc.description.abstractX-ray diffraction experiments on a stage 2 alkali-metal graphite intercalated compound, of approximate composition C[subscript 24]Rb, give evidence that scattering from the quasi-2D liquid alkali-metal layers is composed not only of a diffuse scattering profile, but also of Bragg-like contributions to graphite Bragg peak amplitudes. These contributions are due to the modulation of the disordered sub-system by a potential, with the symmetry of the crystalline matrix, which competes with the interatomic potentials of the disordered system. The modulation potential may be derived from the contributions to the matrix Bragg peaks by the modulated liquid. [...]
