Abstract

Research on classroom practices leveraging the Active Learning methodology - comprised by pedagogy, technology and learning space- reveals an improvement in student performance and a reduction in academic failure rates (Baepler and Walker, 2014; Novak et al, 1999). This study statistically compares the achievement of students of two different Spanish as a second language classes; the first class was conducted in a classroom specifically created according to the Pedagogy of Active Learning (PAA), the second one was taught in a traditional classroom setting. The results demonstrate the need for a general curriculum change in second language teaching. Active Learning pedagogy generates a favorable environment for academic achievement, facilitates the acquisition of a second language, and promotes cognitive development in terms of technology.
