dc.description.abstractThis thesis is a report of an effort to investigate new methods of data reduction. The methods chosen for detailed study were use of the Fast Fourier Transform, limiting, and companding. Chapter four contains two examples of using the Fast Fourier Transform for data compression. Chapters five and six detail an analysis method, using entropy as a metric, which can be used to evaluate the data compression performance of limiters and companders. The final result of the study indicates that the Fast Fourier transform can be used to save transmission bandwidth. A proposed data compression algorithm is given in the concluding chapter.
