Abstract

The radar equation for quantitative rainfall measurement was developed in the 1940's. Rayleigh's scattering formula was applied to raindrops and the radar reflectivity factor was expressed as Z=[sum]N(D)D[superscript 6] which is since then related to the rate of rainfall as Z=AR[superscript b] where A and b are constants. However, experimental observations indicate that this theoretical relation over-predicts the rainfall radar echo power.[...]
