Abstract

Antimicrobial utilization has received much attention in the literature in recent years and studies have shown that usage patterns of antimicrobial agents are less than optimum. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics promotes the emergence of resistant strains of microorganisms and needlessly exposes the patient to a drug which may produce an adverse drug reaction. The present study was undertaken to describe the usage and dosage patterns of gentamicin sulfate, a broad-spectrum, aminoglycoside antibiotic. The clinical efficacy of gentamicin demands that it be used only when specifically indicated; the potential toxicity of gentamicin dictates that patients not be needlessly exposed to the drug. [...]
