Abstract

The possibility of a neasureable portion of the intensity of the gegenschein being attributed to the light refracted by the earth's atmosphere is considered. Rays of light from the sun are traced tlirough the earth's atmosphere with the rotation of the atmosphere taken into account. Using a typical model of the interplanetary ratter, the amount of the refracted light scattered back to the earth is calculated using Mie scattering theory. The intensity predicted at the anti-solar point with the refracted light included is compared to the intensity predicted when the refracted light is ignored, and it is found that the refracted light contributes a non-negligible amount of light to the gegenschein.
