No other individual creative endeavor is beset with more difficulties, for over a longer period of time, than the task of completing a novel. Initially, one who aspires to write a lengthy narrative confronts a problem imposing enough to discourage most other writers: he realizes he must create a complete, fictional world out of the disparate elements of his subjective imagination, and, while satisfying the personal need of making this world in his own image, he must communicate it sensibly to a general body of readers.
