Abstract

An experimental study of filtration of binary mixtures of different grades of Perlite filteraids with Champion Clay and with Calcium Carbonate was carried out under conditions of almost constant-rate (variable-pressure) filtration. A correlation to predict average porosities of any mixed materials in cake filtration as a function of the average porosities (at the same conditions) and the mean Stokes diameter of the pure component was developed. Certain shapes of the curves of specific resistance are representative of filteraids. Those materials in which the specific resistance drops rapidly with concentration characterize good filteraids. Break up of Perlite and Anthracite coal particles due to pumping mechanisms was investigated. While both were relatively resistant to degradation, the coal showed, a larger deterioration than the Perlite.
