Abstract
This master's thesis provides the theory, design, and test results of an electrical system which determines in real-time the rate of oxygen consumed by the cornea of the eye. The Oxygen Uptake Rate System constitutes a suitable clinical instrument for the measurement of oxygen deprivation in contact lens wear, and for monitoring an individual's response to wearing different contact lenses. The system automates the lengthy procedure of calibration, recording and processing of the data necessary to determine the oxygen uptake rate of the cornea, while at the same time reducing the time required to maintain the sampling probe on the cornea surface.
