The middle school, as an alternative to the 'junior high school,' is a recent innovation in education. Throughout the United States, numerous school systems have adopted some new design of middle educational unit into their overall school plan. The purpose of the study was to identify middle school criteria and to analyze the implementation of these criteria in middle schools in the State of Texas. The analysis was achieved through: (1) the selection of middle school criteria, from a review of the literature, and the refinement of said criteria by middle school authorities, (2) the determination of the level of criteria implementation in Texas middle schools, and (3) the utilization of the collected data to design a system of computer-based feedback to assist middle school administrators with comparative analyses and self-evaluations of their schools.
