Abstract

An algorithm is developed to obtain the optimal control policy for lumped nonlinear processes with bounded control and integral constraints. The performance of an industrial process, hydrogenation of acetylene, is optimized and simulated. When the results are compared with those by optimal periodic control, it is found that as much as 70 [percent] improvement can be achieved. Moreover, optimal control can provide useful information for optimal periodic control and even its modification.
