Abstract
Teaching musicianship, i.e. the fundamental concepts of the notation of pitch and meter, within the limits of the junior high school music program, should be a challenge to every music teacher. Unfortunately, some teachers hold that the subject is of little importance. This paper deals with various attitudes toward the importance of the teaching of theory, and with the methods of teaching theory in the junior high school curriculum. The paper also deals with methods of incorporating theory teaching into the performance class schedule. A possible organization of the fundamental areas of musicianship which should not be excluded from the junior high music student's general background forms the balance of the paper.
