dc.description.abstractI. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM. The purpose of this study was (1) to analyze the status of modern mathematics in the primary school, and (2) to develop and illustrate representative nongraded materials and programming of modern mathematics for the primary school, in keeping with the philosophy and recommendations of national study groups. II. PROCEDURES EMPLOYED IN GATHERING DATA. A survey was made of various literature relative to primary mathematics for identification of unifying strands and acceptable philosophy for modern mathematics in the primary school. Some reference material was available through the M. D. Anderson library, however, many bulletins, letters, professional books, and conference reports were secured from the publishers. Ideas and criticisms were collected from approximately fifty primary teachers by classroom observation and teacher interviews. [...]
