Abstract

At least in its Lebanese context, the 1975-1976 civil war in Lebanon was mainly carried on by two groups, each of which represented an alliance of diverse and more often than not, conflicting political parties. On the one hand, there were the Conservative and predominately Maronite parties and organizations such as the Phalangist Party of Pierre Gemayel, Camille Chamoun's Free Nationalists, the Lebanese Maronite order of monks headed by Cherbel Kassis, factions of the Lebanese Army, and the militia of ex-president Suleiman Franjieh.
