Abstract

The Symbolic Differentiation system is a software package written in FORTRAN. Upon calling the routine SREAD, a user supplied Symbolic Function Subprogram is read as input data and all necessary information about it is stored in specially created data structures. The routine also checks the validity of the statements and the syntax of the function definition. Upon calling the routine SDIFF to differentiate a stored function, a binary tree structure which represents the function is created and then utilized to create another binary tree structure which represents the derivative of the function. Finally the routine creates, stores and prints the derivative of the function in the form of an infix string.
