Abstract

This paper considers simulation as an analytical tool and, more specifically, the use of one of the computer languages designed to aid the analyst in carrying out a simulation study, GPSS II (General Purpose Systems Simulator). The test system modeled was the scheduler in the UNIVAC 1108 EXEC II computer operating system at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center which may be thought of as two queues in series. The models for queuing theory and for approximating the waiting time distributions were not promising; however, the simulation model provided several statistics on which to compare the three scheduling algorithms simulated. GPSS also proved, with noted exceptions, to be a convenient language for this type problem.
