dc.description.abstractIn the course of this study, techniques were devised for the purification and screening of bacteriophage coat proteins, which were altered in their antigenic properties, for possible alterations in structure. The results show that the mutant phage most like the parent phage in serological properties had the most changes in its tryptic peptides and conversely the mutant phage the least like the parent phage in serological properties had the least number of changes in its tryptic peptides. These results suggest that slight alterations in certain specific areas of a protein could result in greater antigenic differences than large changes in less sensitive regions of the protein.
