Abstract

"There exists no moral system under which there do not arise unequivocal cases of conflicting obligation. These are the real difficulties, the knotty points both in the theory of ethics and in the conscientious guidance of personal conduct." (James Stuart Mill, "Utilitarianism") The concern of this thesis is to describe in further detail the difficulty of resolving moral conflicts by appealing to Western culture morality and/or act utilitarianism and to suggest an adequate morality, one in which moral conflicts are resolvable.
