The effect of raw soybean on the in vitro accumulation of D-mannitol and L-methionine by rat small intestine

Abstract

The object of this study was to compare the effects of raw soybean on the in vitro passive and active accumulation of D-mannitol and L-methionine, respectively, in the rat distal ileum. Groups of rats were fed 21 days on a 15% protein diet where the initial protein was either supplied by raw soybean, heated soybean or casein. Two groups of animals were pair fed, versus tie raw soybean group, casein and heated soybean diets, respectively. Another two groups, fed casein and heated soybean, had their food intakes restricted on the basis of equal body weight gain with the raw soybean group. The passive accumulation of D-mannitol was significantly less in the raw soybean group when compared to the restricted fed casein group; however, no differences could be detected between the three other control groups. The active accumulation of L-methionine was significantly less in the raw soybean group when compared to the restricted fed controls. In addition, the transmural potentials of the raw soybean group were significantly smaller than those of the restricted controls. It was concluded that raw soybean fed rats have a depressed capability for active L-methionine uptake when compared co the restricted fed controls.
