dc.description.abstractThe presence of an acetyl moiety on the e-amino group of a histone lysine residue neutralizes the charge and is thought to weaken the interaction between the protein N-terminal region and the negatively charged DNA phosphates. This histone modification may allow the DNA to interact with other nuclear factors during genomic events such as DNA replication, repair and transcription, chromatin decondensation after mitosis, and spermatogenesis. In this investigation, the relationship between histone acetylation and transcription in chicken immature and mature red blood cells was studied. The erythrocyte is a highly suitable cell type for this work since it is inactive in DNA replication, DNA repair and mitosis, allowing direct coupling between transcriptional activity and histone acetylation. The immature cell is actively transcribing a restricted subset of genes including the globins and H5. In mature erythrocytes, these genes remain in the potentially active chromatin conformation, but are no longer transcribed. [...]
