dc.description.abstractGuilford has proposed a model of intellectual aptitudes of intelligence which appears to encompass most of the abilities defining testable performances of human intellectual functioning. The Structure of Intellect (SI) model has not only served as a theoretical construct system for research in the psychometric area, but also as a base for a general model of problem solving behavior. Psychological research in human problem solving has been typically characterized as lacking integration and systematic approach for development of a theory or theories of problem solving. Bourne and Battig have proposed a research platform for the establishment of standardized procedures which includes six components: utilization of controlled, systematic, interrelated techniques within methodological diversification; systematic investigation of procedural and task variables; systematic investigation of methodological variations within diversification; utilization of complex experimental tasks and procedures; utilization of multiple-factor experimental designs; and utilization of sequential performance measures. The Structure of Intellect Protocol Analysis System (SIPAS), a technique for investigating and quantifying problem solving mediating processes, was developed by incorporating the SI model and a standardized methodological procedure which complied with Bourne and Battig's components. Standardization of the SIPAS technique, by a series of pilot studies, led to the development of a manual for the system which consisted of the procedures for protocol collection, preparation, and classification. The reliability estimates for classification of protocol elements indicated that the SIPAS could be considered as a reliable research instrument. The question of whether utilization of the SIPAS could detect different approaches to problem solving among groups of subjects, classified as to level of quantitative orientation and professional interest, when measured over a time interval was attended to in this study.
