dc.description.abstractThe primary objectives of the investigation are: (1) to study the effect of alternating loads on the buckling strength of thin cylindrical shells, that is, to determine if the buckling load for a thin cylindrical shell is affected by the number of load applications; (2) to establish the interrelationship between buckling stress and cycles to failure by means of test results, and thereby, develop empirical formulae for predicting the useful "fatigue" buckling life of the shell structure; and (3) to find the relationship between the physical properties of the material that affect buckling, that is, the modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio and the number of cycles of load application that ends with buckling of the thin cylindrical shell.
