Mechanism of torque transmission in tapes and spools

The nature of torque transmission by flat belt drive is well understood (Ref. 1 through 12). However, there does not seem to exist any published explanation about the torque transmission in various tapes wound on spools. The present investigation clarifies some of the phenomena in tape wound spools, giving a basis for design. In addition, it was found that for similar cases the conventional Euler equations are seriously in error.
