dc.description.abstractA survey was conducted to determine the ability of mixed cultures collected from the Buccaneer oil field stations and a control site to degrade Buccaneer crude oil alkanes. No dramatic differences were discerned between samples collected at oil field stations and at the control site. A survey of the percent hydrocarbon degrading microorganisms present at the oil field stations and control site yielded consistently higher percentages present at the active production platform station as compared to other oil field stations or the control site. A rapid alkane degrading bacterium, strain SBO, was isolated from Buccaneer field sediments. [...]
