Mitochondrial DNA, isozymes, and morphology in three Bufo
Gene exchange in three closely related groups of Bufo woodhousei is examined through morphology, isozymes and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Starch gel electrophoresis is used to examine isozymes and restriction enzyme digestions are used to analyze the mtDNA. Stepwise discriminant analysis is performed on each data set and divergence time is estimated from isozyme and mtDNA data. Classification matrices are constructed to demonstrate the cohesiveness of each group. Results indicate that Bu£q w. velatus is most closely related to Bufo w. woodhousei with a divergence time of approximately .3 million years. The most divergent are Bufo W. velatus and Bufo w. fowleri. The three groups are distinguishable using each of the three techniques.
