Abstract
The Lower Rio Grande Valley has been adversely affected economically by the economic problems of Mexico and by its lack of integration into the more diverse economy of the U.S. Young people there, however, are ideologically oriented to the work and success ethic common to young people in other areas of the U.S. This study focuses on the special problems encountered by ambitious Mexican American college students, who are determined to succeed, in spite of various obstacles which derive largely from the sociopolitical and economic structure.
