Abstract

This paper deals with analyses of the first three volumes of Bela Bartok's collection of pieces for piano which he named Mikrokosmos. This collection of piano pieces was conceived by Bartok as a beginner's approach to concepts of midtwentieth century music. The collection starts with the simplest organizations of rhythms, and pentachords and tetrachords, and leads the student through many rhythmical and melodic developments of simple basic materials. The first four chapters deal with Bartok, the man and his musical environment, as an introduction to the analyses.
