Abstract

The study of thermodynamic properties of some electrolytes in methyl cyanide solutions from E.M.F. measurements was carried out potentiometrically. The cells were set up under atmospheric pressure and at different temperatures, without liquid junction and reversibly, i.e. the ions of the electrolyte were reversible with respect to the electrodes. According to G. N. Lewis' proposal, the terms of activity and activity coefficient were determined and compared with Debye-Huckle theory. The deviation of results was due to the uncertainty of the solvent. From the extrapolation method used by G. N. Lewis, the standard potentials were obtained. The zinc and silver-silver chloride electrodes are 0.7477 and 0.3735V. respectively, wuith respect to the hydrogen electrode which is assumed to be zero.
