Abstract

The early life of George Eliot prepared her to accept the philosophy of Auguste Comte. Her first religious experiences taught her the basic rules of life, and contact with the thinking at Coventry encouraged her philosophical bent and led to the abandonment of her early religious faith, while Comte's philosophy served to clarify her own ideas, his Religious of Humanity, or attempt to find a basis for the manifestation of a broader love, became essentially the religion of George Eliot.
