Abstract

This is the story of Calvin Justus, a man who is forced through the event of his older brother's death to return to the scene of his early life, a life he felt he was well rid of, to discover how some of the jumbled parts of himself fit together. It is hoped that at one and the same time it is a story of what has happened to our society in its shift from a rural, small unit, semi-tribal, sort of life, to an urban, vast unit, multiple obligation sort of life. As the novel opens, MacMurry Justus, a World War II hero, has died in prison, ostensibly of typhus. His body has been sent home in a sealed coffin. [...]
