A preliminary investigation of proteins in the developing shrimp

Proteins, in particular malate dehydrogenase isoenzymes, were studied in the developing shrimp larval and postlarval forms. This study was important in determining whether species could be identified in early stages for population studies in the natural environment and in determining whether the malate dehydrogenase electrophoretic isoenzyme patterns changed with development of the shrimp. Larval shrimp samples were obtained from the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries for studies at this stage in development. Postlarval samples were obtained from the Bureau also and were successfully cultured in our laboratory. It was determined that larval and postlarval shrimp have species characteristic electrophoretic protein patterns in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and that there are malate dehydrogenase isoenzyme changes as the shrimp develop. The techniques used in this research were qualitative and indicated the future possibility of isolation, quantitative and physical examination of the isoenzymes of MDH and perhaps other enzyme systems in the shrimp.
