Abstract

A hollow, tapered, rectangular, elastic column subject to axial and transverse loading is formulated using the methods of the energy principles of mechanics. The Rayleigh Ritz technique is used to obtain an optimization for minimum structural weight. The constraint equations embodied the application of geometric restrictions, as well as elastic stability criteria. Simultaneous satisfaction of the numerous constraints to the objective function requires the assistance of a digital computer and a minimization technique capable of handling inequality constraints.
