Abstract

Problem. The purpose of this study was to determine the methods and procedures to be used in the establishment of an organized reading program in the eighth grade of the junior high school of La Marque Texas. The problem of the study was to organize and conduct an experimental reading program on the junior high school level to determine which of two procedures would result in the maximum gains for the students. Specifically, the study attempted to answer the following questions: 1. Is there a best time to offer a developmental reading program? 2. Can a developmental reading program be taught without the aid of the reading specialist? 3. Will the experimental program obtain consistent results when the program is repeated, using different groups of children? 4. Do children in the first, second, third, or fourth quartiles gain most from this type of reading training, and are there any children who are not benefited? [...]
