Abstract

The chromatin structure in eukaryotes must somehow be altered during transcription and DNA replication in order to allow access to appropriate enzymes and other factors. The existence of enzymatic histone acetylation and deacetylation provides opportunities for chromatin structural changes. The yeast Saccharomvces Cerevisiae contains the acetyltransferase and deacetylase enzymes that acetylate and deacetylate histones, respectively. The yeast histone acetyltransferases have been purified and characterized.
