Abstract

The investigation of [phi]29 recombinational process followed two main avenues of examination. First; Bacillus subtilis cells with gene mutations normally associated with recombination served as hosts for [phi]29 recombination. Second; Wild-type Bacillus subtilis cells, treated with drugs which produce phenotypic deficiencies in enzymes necessary to recombination, were used as hosts for the [phi]29 crosses. In both cases, Bacillus subtilis provided host environments deficient in specific enzymes normally concerned with recombination.
