Abstract
Various electrical conductivity expressions are reviewed. Results of one recent derivation are presented In detail; in this derivation, all possible particle interactions are treated rigorously, and ion motion is considered. The conductivity expressions are valid even at ion cyclotron resonance. These results are applied to the problem of joule heating in the magnetosphere. Approximate calculations show that, due to resonance effects, joule heating may be sufficient to produce the observed temperatures In the magnetosphere. High energy particles can be obtained as well.
